Sports Illustrated Four Players You Should Get To Know (2007-08 Preseason Issue)Get Acrobat Reader

SUN DEVIL DATA: Has established himself as one of the best post players in the Pac-10 the past three seasons and continues to improve and impress not only on the court, but off the court with his demeanor and attitude towards fans, student-body, media and the ASU community. Work ethic both on the court and in the classroom is off the charts as he is on pace to earn his economics degree in December of 2008. A third-team All-Pac-10 pick and one of just six (of 15) All-Pac-10 players returning in 2007-08 after earning All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention in 2006-07 and Pac-10 All-Freshman Honors in 2005-06 (despite missing all of fall conditioning and most of November in his freshman year after fall surgery to remove a benign tumor in his left leg). His rebounding average in his sophomore year (2006-07) matched second-best effort by a Sun Devil in the past 27 seasons. He has learned to be active defensively (56 blocks after posting 45 total in his first two seasons), is efficient on the offensive end (third in Pac-10 in field goal percentage last year at .593) and has a sweet stroke at the charity stripe (.799 last year, tenth in the league, and .757 in his career). Easily had the best freshman "surprise" season in the Pac-10 in 2005-2006 and has improved his numbers each year and increased his weight by 25 pounds from the fall of his freshman season (210) to now (235). Has twice grabbed 19 rebounds in a game. Has 18 career double-doubles (second-most among active Pac-10 players to Jon Brockman's 40) and 17 career double-figure rebounding games. Has made 261-of-481 (.543) shots from the field in Pac-10 games.

WHERE HE CAME FROM: Played for one of the most successful high school programs in the nation, as his Etiwanda (Calif.) teams were 62-5 his final two seasons under coach David Kleckner. Fellow Division I signees on his prep team included Darren Collison (UCLA), Marcus Carter (Portland State) and David Carter (UC Davis).

LOFTY GOALS: Pendergraph became the 30th member of the ASU 1,000-point club against USC on March 1. He has 1,065 points in 90 career games (11.8 points per game). He also has 652 career rebounds (7.2 per game), just four away from joining the ASU top-10 list. Tony Cerkvenik has the ASU record of 1,022 boards from 1960-63. Pendergraph needs 367 to tie, an average of 10.8 boards per game if he plays 34 games (which ASU did in 2007-08).

NOT A NORMAL THING: Jeff Pendergraph has a chance to be the only player to lead ASU in rebounding for four straight seasons. Three straight years had only happened twice in school history prior, as Ike Diogu led the Sun Devils from 2002-2005 and Al Nealey did it from 1957-60.

JUNIOR SEASON (2007-08): Earned All-Pac-10 third-team honors in arguably nation's toughest conference...third in league in field goal percentage at 59.3 percent...had 21 points and seven boards in 34 minutes in ASU's win over NCAA Tournament bound USC on March 1...posted 15 points and 12 boards in ASU's upset win of seventh-ranked Stanford on Feb. 14...earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors after posting career-high 29 points (12-of-16 from the floor) and eight boards in 59-54 comeback win at Arizona on Feb. 10, ASU's first win in Tucson since 1995...had 26 points in ASU's road win vs. California on Jan. 17 on 12-of-17 shooting...had 27 points and was 13-of-14 from the free throw line in Dec. 22 win over Idaho...had 25 points against LSU's long front line in overtime win in Maui Invitational on Nov. 27.

SOPHOMORE SEASON (2006-07): Earned honorable mention All-Pac-10 as he led team in scoring (12.1 points per game) and rebounding (9.1)...second in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage (.553), rebounding (8.9 per game), offensive rebounding (3.33) and was fourth in minutes per game (35.5) in league games...led league in offensive rebounding (3.93 per game) in overall games and was second in rebounding (9.1) and field goal percentage (.555)...grabbed 19 boards at No. 13 Oregon (Feb. 8) and vs. Colgate (Dec. 19), the most by a Sun Devil since Mike Batiste had 20 vs. Wagner on Nov. 19, 1997.

FRESHMAN SEASON (2005-06): Averaged 14.7 points (second on the team)...missed all of fall conditioning and most of November after fall surgery to remove a benign tumor in his left leg...notched Pac-10 All-Freshman honors and was ranked among the freshmen league leaders with 10.9 points per game (second), 6.1 boards per game (third), a 49.4 percent field goal percentage (third) and led all Pac-10 freshman with 0.85 blocks per game...posted 15 double-figure scoring games (eight of final nine) and averaged 13.0 points and 8.3 boards in final six games...finished fourth in the league in field goal percentage (Pac-10 games), shooting 87-of-169 (.515)...started final 22 games and averaged 33.8 minutes in final 11 games...all five double-doubles came in Pac-10 play, including two against Arizona...23 blocks was fifth-best by an ASU freshman and 6.1 boards was fourth-best.
